The term femme fatale, meaning “fatal woman” in French, emerged in the late nineteenth century to describe a particular kind of female figure, one whose beauty, charm, and intelligence conceal a dangerous, often destructive power.

Figures such as Lilith, often portrayed as a rebellious and seductive demon in Jewish folklore, or Circe and Medea from Greek mythology, can be seen as early prototypes of the femme fatale. These women were depicted as powerful and autonomous, yet also as threats to male heroes, embodying a blend of fascination and fear toward female agency. The expression itself became widely recognized during the Symbolism and Decadent movement in late 19th-century Europe. Artists and writers of this period were captivated by themes of desire, danger, and moral ambiguity, and the femme fatale emerged as a central figure in their work. Painters like Gustave Moreau and Gustav Klimt frequently depicted women as enigmatic and powerful beings, often associated with death or transformation.
