Granjon is a serif typeface designed in 1928 by George W. Jones for the Linotype foundry, inspired by the work of the 16th-century punchcutter Robert Granjon. Unlike strict historical revivals, Granjon is an interpretation of Renaissance old-style typography, particularly influenced by Granjon’s expressive italics, which are a defining feature of the typeface.

The design combines classical proportions with a warm, calligraphic rhythm, visible in its gently bracketed serifs, moderate contrast, and flowing italic forms that retain a strong sense of handwriting. Originally intended for book typography, Granjon offers good readability in continuous text while also carrying a refined, literary tone. Its italics are especially notable for their elegance and liveliness, often considered among the most successful revivals of Renaissance cursive writing in metal type. Overall, Granjon stands as a 20th-century reinterpretation of humanist printing traditions, balancing historical reference with the technical and aesthetic needs of modern typesetting.
