This places Englische Antiqua firmly within Genzsch & Heyse's prestigious family of Antiqua typefaces, their "old style" serif range, which was the jewel of the Hamburg foundry's catalog in the early 20th century.

The name tells us exactly what it was: an old style serif in the English tradition, rooted in the great British type revival of the mid-19th century. This genre, pioneered by the Edinburgh foundry Miller & Richard and punchcutter Alexander Phemister, produced warm, readable, humanist serif faces that spread rapidly across Europe. Genzsch & Heyse had a strong appetite for English-influenced old style designs, also publishing a Franzosische Elzevir in 1892, whose smaller sizes came directly from the French Deberny foundry's Romain Ancien, with Genzsch & Heyse cutting matching larger sizes in-house.
