Sicunha

Sicunha
Cheltenham's original design dates to 1896 by Bertram Goodhue and Ingalls Kimball, later developed by Morris Fuller Benton at ATF, and its overwhelming popularity for display purposes lasted until the arrival of geometric sans-serif typefaces in the 1930s.
Sicunha
The face was so widely licensed that Linotype, Monotype, and Ludlow each produced their own versions with almost as many variations as ATF itself, with Intertype releasing their version under the name Cheltonian. Fonts In Use This was very common practice at the time, French foundries like Deberny & Peignot regularly licensed or adapted popular American and German typefaces and gave them French names or French-specific variant names. "Noir" in French foundry terminology simply means black/ultra-bold weight, so Cheltenham Noir would refer to the heaviest, darkest display cut of the Cheltenham family as offered by Deberny & Peignot — similar to how they renamed Futura as "Europe."
