Monotone Gothic is essentially a lighter more extended companion to Franklin Gothic sharing its industrial earlymodern American grotesque character but with a more even calm stroke contrast and wider spacing that gives it a more open less aggressive appearance Only one weight was produced and it was not widely expanded or copied by other foundries which makes it a relatively rare but important step in Bentons effort to refine functional sansserif typography for advertising and print in the early twentieth century
